Week 2 Story: The Cursed Island

Image
The captain inhaled deeply. The deep blue waves tumbled over and over, slowly growing in intensity. The sky looked a normal, unassuming shade of blue, but the captain could see the hidden greens and muted yellows—the markings of a storm. As the boat rocked against the water, he prepared for the worst. His instinct told him that the night would bring treachery.             As the Captain assembled his crew, a sinister presence on some island miles away began their preparations as well. Theirs chants vile and loud rang through the night. Torches were lit and glowing as the Rakshasi, she-goblins, preyed upon the flesh of their male captives.             The captain and the goblins’ paths were fated to cross the moment he set out onto the sea. That night, despite his best efforts, the ship crashed against a wall of sharp rocks, sending the men plummeting into the depths below. The goblins heard the crash, thinking of their own motives, took the form of beautiful women

Reading Notes: Week 2 Anthology

Goblin City from  The Giant Crab, and Other Tales from Old India by W. H. D. Rouse The Plot: In a city of she-goblins (that sometimes wanted husbands. It depended on their mood,) a ship full of 500 men finds itself wrecked near the infested city. In order to deceive the men and not scare them away, they made an illusion of this peaceful, farm life with their magic powers which convinced them to stay. Now lulled into a false sense of security and feeling bad for these women who said their husbands were lost at sea, the men agreed to marry the women, not knowing what trouble would be ahead. The captain woke up as his wife came back, who was still munching on the bones of men held in their goblin prison, and heard her say alarming words about eating men. He didn't like that. The captain told those around him, some believed some didn't, and lucky for him, he found a fairy that so happened to hate goblins and agreed to help him. With the help of fairy powers and a horse, som

Week 2 Reading Overview

Image
The Ramayana version I have chosen to read is the Public Domain edition for several reasons. For starters, I'm a huge supporter of free and accessible educational materials and love that this version is free. I also think that it's great that this version has notes and illustrations. I believe it will deepen the experience for me. The audio version is another added bonus! While the other edition is pretty neat too, I personally feel as if I will benefit the most from this version. I like having notes to help when I am having difficulty understanding a text. The pictures help me see the story. The Public Domain edition is the right way for me! Rama: Retold From The Ramayana I enjoy reading about Rama. I think he's a good hero. He's a good man with a good heart. He's a character that I like to see succeed. His journeys are entertaining. His relationship with Sita is also very good! I enjoy the two of them immensely. I liked this one because it seemed exciting and

Time Strategies

Image
Time management is something everyone struggles with, or at least I hope that's the case. I certainly struggle with it quite a bit. Developing a good battle plan to tackle time management issues seems like a surefire way to remedy the problem.  The first article I read, " Eat The Frogs First Thing in The Morning ," was enlightening in that it highlighted several problem areas that I have right off of the bat. Spotting the "frog" or things you don't want to do, need to do, etc., should be done sooner than later and increase productivity. Starting with your hardest task is actually something that I have done in the past but have gotten out of the habit of doing. This article was a nice reminder of the things I can get done if I start picking that up again!  The second article I chose, " The Important Habit of Just Starting ," really broke down the consequences of procrastination and why it's so important to just start your project, assignm

Technology

Image
I'm not familiar with many of the tools listed. Courses that I've taken have heavily relied on Canvas for any kind of online work, so using these sites will be new to me mostly. Having looked through all of the links provided though, it seems fairly straightforward and shouldn't be too big of a learning curve! I appreciate learning other platforms to do our work on. We can't stay on Canvas forever. I'd like to improve my editing skills over the semester, which is something I believe to be doable! Technology Science ( Pixabay )

Assignments

Image
I'm most excited for the assignments that involve storytelling. I think it'll be a fun challenge. I'm also intrigued to see what my classmates will be creating as well. I haven't been apart of a course that encourages commenting in this capacity-- it's a nice change! In regards to extra credit, I haven't had opportunities like this. I'm looking forward to seeing where the semester will take me and what I can reflect on at the end. Book Page ( Pexels )

Growth Mindset

Image
A Growth Mindset Fuels Creativity in Youth Confirming what I already knew, a lot of "growth mindset" is about flexibility, or at least is a key part in it. Something new being embracing mistakes! I'm often susceptible to perfectionism to the point that it's unhealthy for myself, I'm hoping to embrace the imperfect so I have better opportunities to learn in the future. I'm interested in seeing how this process will work overall. Hearing people talk about it is one thing, but seeing it in action is another entirely. The research shown shows that it's probably wonderful, I'm still just wanting to wait and see!  Open Mind ( Pixabay ) I believe "growth mindset" to be pretty cool! I had never approached learning this way before so it's fresh and exciting. Needing validation is a huge issue in our society and we need to start training ourselves off of it, working towards more difficult challenges and higher learning. I personall

Introduction to a Dolly Parton Fanatic

Image
As someone who writes frequently, I find it difficult to write about myself, but I will do my best! My name is pronounced like ‘Riley’ and I’m a criminology major. My most frequently asked question is, “Do you want to be a cop?” Nope! Having studied the criminal justice system so intensely, I’ve decided I’d rather not have a career in it. I’d rather teach or do social work. I’d also be fine doing independent studies of some sort. I love sociology. I think it’s so, so important in today’s political climate that we tackle social problems with care. As much as I love talking about my major, it can be a tad heavy at times. When I’m not trying to save the world, I like to research people. My two favorites happen to be similar in many respects, Dolly Parton and Billy the Kid, western icons. Dolly and I share the same birthday and I feel we are linked somehow because of this. Coming from poverty and being able to create such an empire for herself, I just think she’s rema
