Reading Notes: PDE Mahabharata A

Bhima and the Nagas by Donald A. MacKenzie

Duryodhana is such a snake... get it because there are snakes in this section? Yeah, that wasn't funny. So, Duryodhana hates his cousins and decides he's gonna attack one of them, this time it's Bhima. Bhima is a Pandava, so he comes out of the snake attack fine. He also goes to the underworld to fight the snakes and because he isn't fated to die, he doesn't die! Because he had swallowed poison previously, the poison from the snakes doesn't bother him at all and he goes peacefully to the underworld to meet Aryaka. He is given the strength of a giant.

The Arrival of Karna by Donald A. MacKenzie

Karna is here! Finally! Love that! I had to do a lot of research on him when I was starting my storybook, so I like him lots. I like this section for several reasons, it sets up Arjuna and Karna's rivalry and I like seeing Duryodhana interact nicely with people. Basically, Arjuna was supposed to win the competition, but Karna swoops in wins, all shiny like the sun. Arjuna doesn't like this and everyone thinks that Arjuna's stock as a hero drops because of Karna's newfound relevance.

Duryodhana's Jealousy by C. A. Kincaid

I'm realizing there's a lot of characters to keep up with... Kind of having a hard time remembering who did what, but that's okay! The Kauravas attacks the Pandavas as led by Duryodhana, surprising no one. They lost. Arjuna had a cool chariot and Bhima had a mace, it was pretty neat. Arjuna fights Drupada and wins. Arjuna doesn't want Bhima to kill anymore people. Drona and Drupada split the kingdom and their friendship is revived, a happy ending for the boys. For now at least. There's still much excitement to come.
